As for their geographical distribution, not counting the Basque and Spanish films, the countries taking part include Germany (10 films), USA (5), France (5) and Great Britain (4). Accordingly, we observe this year, for the first time, participation from countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia and Kenya) and Asia (the Philippines and Malaysia), which is again proof of the truly universal nature of the event. As with the Spanish and Basque sections, the Latin American section has a specific prize in the official awards, with films from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela taking part in this edition.

2.- INFOSPAIN

Panorama of the Spanish shorts in the areas of fiction, documentaries and animations, not included in the official section. This year, this section includes 14 films.

3.- INFOEUSKADI

This exhibition includes 14 Basque productions in the areas of fiction, documentaries and animations not included in the official section.

4.- ARTURO RIPSTEIN

Five important films selected by the author himself to give a review of the prolific and intense work of this great Mexican filmmaker, to whom ZINEBI has this year decided to award the 48th edition of the Mikeldi de Honor in recognition of the originality of his contribution to the film industry in Latin America and of the global dimension of his filmography. The five titles included in this retrospective exhibition are as follows: El castillo de la pureza (1973), El lugar sin lmites (1978), El imperio de la fortuna (1986), La mujer del puerto (1991) and Asi es la vida (2000).

5.- JAMES BENNING

President of the ZINEBI 48 International Jury, this unique North American filmmaker (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1942) is one of the best-known representatives of independent films in his country. Professor of Cinema at the Northwestern University, he has taught at the California Institute of the Arts since 1987. In the words of the film critic and writer, Santos Zunzunegui, his films, which are unknown or not well known in Spain, represent "a fundamentally sensitive proposal which supposes the patient construction of a capturing device for trapping that skin of things in its web, an activity that has constituted the purpose of landscape painting for centuries."

6.- YOUNG CUBAN CINEMA. RECENT EXHIBITION

In collaboration with Instituto Cubano del Arte y la Industria Cinematogrfica (ICAIC), ZINEBI offers a complete and suggestive view of the productions by today's young Cuban filmmakers, a set of shorts in the areas of fiction and documentaries that represent a critical view of the reality of their country and an attempt to explore new thematic and formal areas.

7.- FASHION MOOD

An exhibition of films dedicated to the work of some of the great contemporary creators of the fashion world (Yamamoto, Galliano, etc.). The exhibition offers the opportunity of attending the screening of the winners of You Wear It Well, the most important competition in the world of fashion and its cinematographic image, held each year in the United States. This cycle will be presented by the North American video journalist, based in Paris, Diane Pernet, ultimate Guru of contemporary fashion, critic, researcher and informer who has earned her distinguished position through her permanent support for new talent and emerging trends from all over the world.

8.- UNPATRIOTIC VISIONS. EXPERIMENTAL FILMS FROM NY AND SURROUNDINGS

Exhibition of some of the recent works by the youngest members of the avant-garde in experimental production in the city of New York and elsewhere in the USA. On occasions, these films are not easily classified by the conventional rules of genre. Their brilliance and great personal demands focus on sensitive areas of modern-day North American life, such as 11-S, the step backwards in civil rights in the fight against terrorism, the institutional and citizen paranoia caused by extreme security measures, border control, etc.

9.- EBA (EUSKAL BIDEOARTISTAK)

For the third year running, ZINEBI offers a panoramic view of the latest productions in the field of video art and multidiscipline audiovisual experiences in the Basque country. In particular, this edition seeks to present the work of artists (Ramn Churruca, Xavier Erkizia, Fundacin Rodrguez, Isabel Herguera, Iratxe Jaio and Chuchu Nez) who work more and more in collaboration with other artists on a more international scale. Their work shows how they have been influenced by their stays abroad and their intercontinental relations.

10.- DOCUMENTARY OF FRENCH CREATION

This cycle analyses the latest evolution of French documentaries through the works of some of the youngest and most representative of today's filmmakers. In their films, Clarisse Hahn, Florence Lazar, Ariane Michel and Olivier Zabat show their concerns for what is real (antipersonnel mines, the killings of the war in the former Yugoslavia, sadomasochistic relations and the personal adventure of polar expeditions); however, according to the organiser of this exhibition, Emmanuel Tibloux, they reveal "their permanent research and preparation of a syntax that is indifferent to the norms dictated by exterior demands but guided by the sole concern of responding to their desires and most intimate creative requirements."

11.- ROSA VON PRAUNHEIM

An exhibition of the work of this German filmmaker whose pseudonym refers to the triangle that had to be worn by homosexuals in the Nazi concentration camps. A transgressive, vehement and combative artist whose filmography has contributed to the fight for gay, lesbian and transsexual rights since her pioneering films of the 1970s. Rosa von Praunheim visits our city to offer the public of Bilbao a lesson in cinema as part of the ZINEBIDOK seminar. She is to talk about the bases of her work as a builder of images for the fight against homophobic attitudes, sexual discrimination and intolerance.

12.- SCOTTISH CREAM

A view of the Scottish production of animations over recent years. An opportunity for focusing on an up-and-coming area of the film industry with cultural, industrial and political features that are similar to those of the Basque country and other countries in Europe. The exhibition presents a type of audiovisual production that shows, on an international scale and with increasing effectiveness, the success of a regional industrial structure within a Europe under construction. The works include pieces by Gili Dolev, who visits Bilbao at the fore of this cycle and as a member of the ZINEBI 48 International Jury.

13.- INSIDE THE WALLS/OUTSIDE THE WALLS. LIFE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Another collaboration with the Graz Architecture Biennial (Austria), which, in recent years, has made it possible for ZINEBI to present the most recent films from all over the world dedicated to the realities of contemporary architecture, urban agglomerations and their continuing metamorphosis. This year, we look at one of the hottest territories and geopolitical conflicts on the planet: the Middle East (the Lebanon, Israel and Palestine). The cycle looks at the role played by walls, particularly the wall that runs between the territories of Israel and Palestine, in the material and psychological conditions of the people they set against each other and seek to separate. It also analyses the walls as elements that condition urban development, the memory of the past and the landscape.

14.- ZINEBIDOK

For the sixth year running, ZINEBI 48 includes the seminar titled ZINEBIDOK, a two-day encounter for students, young filmmakers, professionals and experts in the production of documentaries organised by the festival in collaboration once again with Media Antena Euskal Herria and Universidad del Pas Vasco (UPV). The event seeks to present participants with new ideas and trends in the film-creation process, analysing the ways in which film scripts are put together, and, on a more practical scale, together with this year's guest filmmakers, considering specific aspects of the work involved in the said creation process. This year, ZINEBIDOK includes the participation of Arturo Ripstein (Mexico), Rosa von Praunheim (Germany), Pablo Trapero (Argentina) and Isaki Lacuesta (Spain). In addition, there will be retrospective exhibitions of the first two and the last two, two unique filmmakers who, although with different methods, tend to refute the idea of documentary and fiction as separate genres, will hold practical workshops in which they will show their experience and the montage methods they use with their films.

15.- ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF FIPCA

Federacin Iberoamericana de Productores Cinematogrficos y Audiovisuales (FIPCA) has decided to hold the annual meeting of its board, presided by Camilo Vives Palles, in the framework of the 48th edition of ZINEBI. FIPCA was founded in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 1997 and its immediate predecessors were the Ibero-American summits of heads of state and government and the creation of the Ibermedia Programme, a fund for subsidising film productions in Latin America. Its objectives include the defence of the interests of the Ibero-American audiovisual and film sector and the promotion of national legislations that define the strategic condition of the audiovisual industry to strengthen cultural identities and languages and their economic and commercial potential. During the session in Bilbao, the members of FIPCA will meet with producers, filmmakers, representatives of TV channels and institutions related to the audiovisual industry in the Basque country with a view to discussing common problems, exchanging experiences and approaching possible strategies and collaboration projects.

16.- CLIP-KLUB. THE MUSIC VIDEO IN THE WORLD

In collaboration with EITB, ZINEBI dedicates this cycle to reviewing the production of music videos and concerts on film involving all kinds of modern-day music in the Basque country, Spain and abroad. We shall have the chance to see the latest video clips, review the work of the filmmaker Iker Trebio, author of the emblematic clips of Barricada, Fermin Muguruza and the latest clip of Chenoa. In addition, we will witness a head-to-head between two fundamental groups: The Jam and The Clash. There will also be a novelty (Animaclip), approximately 100 surprising minutes of musical animation beginning with Yellow Submarine and dominated by the opera.

17.- SPECIAL SCREENINGS

This year, three works will be screened in this section: Armas sin control includes four vibrant shorts on the proliferation of all kinds of firearms in private hands and the absolute lack of control of their use and their dramatic consequences in an increasing number of places in the world. This film has been produced by Amnesty International and Intermon Oxfam Tras un largo silencio, directed by Sabin Eguilior, is the result of four years' intense research work by this filmmaker and his team on those who were shot and disappeared during the civil war and on the still-visible marks of a collective tragedy that is gradually coming to light. The documentary Ajuria Enea en la memoria, directed by Javier Gutirrez, offers the testimonies of two former lehendakaris (Carlos Garaikoetxea and Jos Antonio Ardanza) on the development of self-government institutions in the Basque country after the enactment of the Statute of Autonomy in 1980. This section of the ZINEBI programme comes to a close with the recent Hispano-Cuban co-production Pginas del diario de Mauricio (2006), directed by the famous and veteran Manuel Prez, member of the International Jury of this 48 edition, who presents an intelligent analysis of the situation of his country on the basis of events such as the adventure of the boy Elin Gonzlez, the defeat of the Cuban basketball team by the USA and the victory of the women's volleyball team over Russia.

18.- RESCUED FROM THE BASQUE FILM ARCHIVE

This year, the Basque film archive offers ZINEBI and the public of Bilbao two short, delightful rarities by a person who is possibly the rarest (in the nicest possible way) of Basque filmmakers. They constitute the first two shorts made by the filmmaker from San Sebastian, Ivn Zulueta, in 1972. The negatives of these films have been lost and, as a result, the Basque Film Archive has used existing copies to restore both the images and the soundtrack. The shorts in question are Frank-Stein, filmed in 35 mm, a very particular reading based on frozen images and fleeting slow-motion action of the work by James Whale filmed directly on its television broadcast, and Masaje, a genuine visual massage for the eyes with brief images from films, advertisements, news programmes and reports in fast-flowing succession.

19.- HBITO DE ESTRELLAS EXHIBITION

In collaboration with Fundacion Bilbao 700, a complete exhibition of the glittering models created by the greatest wardrobe designers for some of the best-known actors (Kenneth Brannagh, Russell Crowe, Grard Dpardieu, etc.) and actresses (Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren, Romy Schneider, etc.) from the world stage and some of the most outstanding films (Il Gattopardo, Sissi, Amadeus, etc.) in the history of the European film industry from the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition will take up the cultural centre of El Ensanche during the months of November and the whole of the Arriaga Theatre during the week of the festival.

20.- ZINESKOLA

Matinee sessions in the Arriaga Theatre, where the children of Bilbao will have the opportunity to see the most recent productions in the areas of fiction and animations for children. The arguments of the films also attract the interest of students and teachers and constitute useful teaching tools from the point of view of the education of values given in classrooms.

21- MIKROZINEBI

Installation in Plaza del Teatro Arriga, the main location for the festival, of two industrial containers, one of which will be used as a cinema with a capacity for 25 people.
