. Since 1985, Lourdes Portillo has produced
more than 20 films and videos ranging from feature documentaries
to experimental video installations. Her productions
include the Academy Award nominated feature documentary
produced and directed by Ms. Portillo and Susana Muñoz:
Las Madres: The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo. It was the
first documentary that chronicled the struggle for justice
of the mothers of the disappeared during the Argentinean
dictatorship of the 70’s and 80’s.
La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead (also produced in
collaboration with Muñoz), Traces the roots of
the Days of the Dead celebration in Mexico as well as
the U.S. Columbus on Trial is an experimental satire
of Columbus and the quincentenial, with the Latino Theater
group, Culture Clash. In 1996 she produced and directed
the critically acclaimed, experimental documentary,
The Devil Never Sleeps about the loves and hates of
a Mexican Family, In 1997 she produced and directed
Corpus a Home Movie for Selena. Her latest documentary
is Señorita Extraviada a documentary that tells
the story of over 300 murdered women in Ciudad Juarez
Mexico. Her experimental work and her influence in the
Independent Film world is of considerable importance. |
Lourdes Portillo is dedicated to the creation of film and
videos that document and explore the Latino/Chicano experience
in modern America. She has always sought to inform, spark
and expand the dialog concerning Latino issues and identity
to the general population and particularly to the Latino and
Chicano communities through varied endeavors. She has also
sought to experiment and push the boundaries of the documentary
form for which she is known.
Her films have been exhibited theatrically, at countless
film festivals throughout the world such as Sundance, Venice,
Havana, Toronto, New Directors, Munich, Hong Kong, Creteil,
London, Madrid, Valladolid, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Buenos
Aires, Sao Paolo and many others), and in schools, and in
museums. They have been broadcast on television in the United
States and throughout the world. She has received at least
30 International prizes of recognition for her work.
