The films shown will be the ninety-six
selected by the Festival organization. Entries are classed
under fiction, documentary, and animation.Among the films
competing there are ten from Spain, six from the Basque
Country, seven from the US, Great Britain, and Germany,
and six from France.
Before the closing session there will be a concert given
by the actress and singer Hanna Schygulla, a major figure
in European cinema of the second half of the 20th century,
in collaboration with the Fundación Bilbao 700
Foundation

Series in homage to Julián Elejoste, a Bilbao
industrialist who devoted forty years of his life to filming
railway themes of every sort in Super 8: trains, stations,
tracks, and the areas around them. There will be a screening
of short films shot over the years 1940-1960, dealing with
trams in Bilbao and Arratia, the Basque-Navarrese train, and
the steam train connecting Bilbao with Balmasa. All are unedited.
Selection
of short films and feature-length films for children, supplemented
by pedagogic activities. The aim is to introduce children
to cinematographic and audiovisual culture.
Screening
of Basque entries and of a selection of those Spanish entries
that were not admitted to the competition section, all of
them representative examples of the year's production.
In the lobby of the Arriaga Theatre, November 24-29, there
will be a showing of the work of Alvaro Sánchez, Bilbao-Hollywood,
comprising portraits of the stars of classical Hollywood,
framed in buildings and various other Bilbao sites. This exhibition
has been organized with the collaboration of the Fundación
Bilbao 700 Foundation.
[Basque
Film Library]. As part of its work in recovering the Basque
audiovisual heritage, the FILMOTECA will show two documentaries
recently restored, namely : "Fiestas de Plencia Años
Veinte" and "Entierro de José Antonio Aguirre".
During the closing ceremony the film club
FAS will be presented with an honorary Mikeldi in recognition
of its contribution to Bilbao film culture throughout its
fifty years of existence.
The Arriaga
Theatre will also be the scene for two debates. Filmmakers
participating in the series "The Light Brigades; Artistic
and Political Vanguard in Spanish Cinema" will take part
in a round-table discussion of militant and experimental film.
The second debate will be organized by the Association of
Basque Producers and will be addressed to the role of public
television in film production.
